Skip bin or green waste removal: which is cheaper for a garden clear-out?
The comparison only works once you answer one question: who is doing the cutting and the loading? A skip is a container and a disposal fee. Removal is a container, a disposal fee and a pair of hands. Compare them without settling that and the skip always looks cheaper, because you are pricing half a job against a whole one.

The three options side by side
Melbourne guides published in 2026 put a 2 cubic metre mini skip at $210 to $380 and a 4 cubic metre bin at $315 to $525. When the skip is the better choice
A skip wins whenever the constraint is time rather than labour. If you are clearing over a long weekend, filling the bin an hour at a time as you work through the garden, a skip is the cheapest way to buy that pattern of work. Nobody has to be there. Nothing has to be finished by four o’clock.
It also wins when the waste is mixed. A garden clear-out that includes old fence palings, a rotted planter box and half a shed is not a green waste job at all, and a general waste skip handles the lot in one hire. Green waste removal will not take treated timber, and neither will a green waste skip.
And it wins on volume. Once a job runs past a few trailer loads, a 4 cubic metre bin at a published $315 to $525 starts to beat paying per load, particularly if you have the weekend and the willingness to fill it.
When removal is the better choice
Removal wins whenever the labour is the actual problem. If the pile does not exist yet, a skip does not help you, because the expensive part of a clear-out is not the disposal. It is cutting a hedge down and dragging it up a side path in ten trips.
It also wins when there is nowhere to put a bin. This is where Wyndham has a rule worth knowing before you book anything. Wyndham City requires a permit to place a bin or skip on a nature strip or roadway, and states it needs 15 working days to process one. No permit is needed if the skip sits on private property such as a driveway or yard.
On a newer Tarneit or Truganina block with a single narrow driveway and a car that has to live on it, that rule turns a same week job into a three week job. A trailer that arrives and leaves inside a couple of hours does not touch the permit question at all.
What a green waste skip will not take
Green waste bins take lawn clippings, prunings, branches and leaf litter. They do not take soil, treated timber or hard waste. This matters more than it sounds, because the cheaper green waste rate depends on the load staying clean, and one wrong item can move the whole bin into the general waste rate.
Put a few bags of soil or a couple of treated sleepers in a green waste bin and the load can be reclassified as general waste at the higher rate. The saving that made the green bin worth booking disappears, and you find out at invoice time rather than at booking time.
Doing it yourself, honestly costed
Two costs and a day. A Melbourne hire guide quoted a 6 by 4 single axle cage trailer at $35 to $50 a day in June 2026. At the gate, Wyndham City’s fee schedule dated 1 July 2023 listed a heaped single axle trailer of green waste at $100 at the Refuse Disposal Facility on Wests Road in Werribee.
That 2023-24 figure is not the current schedule, so check the council’s published fees before planning around it. Even so, the shape of the answer is clear: for one modest load, doing it yourself is comfortably the cheapest option on this page, and for anyone with a ute or a trailer already sitting at home it is cheaper still.
The cost that does not appear on either line is the loading. A trailer of palm fronds takes longer to load than most people expect, and it is the part that decides whether the day was worth it.

Set against the table above, that is not the cheapest way to move green waste and it is not sold as one. A 4 cubic metre skip holds more per dollar. A hired trailer and your own Saturday beats both. What $320 buys is that the waste is gone the same visit, loaded by someone else, with no bin on the driveway and no permit to think about.
