How much does lawn mowing cost in Melbourne’s west?
Cost guides published in 2026 put a standard suburban mow in Melbourne at roughly $40 to $100 a visit, and Airtasker’s national guide puts the average job at $80. Around Hoppers Crossing and Werribee the more useful question is what the visit includes, because a mow that leaves the clippings and one that takes them away are different jobs.

What the published guides actually say
The national and Melbourne guides do not agree with each other, and the gap is wide enough to matter. The lowest published figure for a standard suburban visit is $40 and the highest for the same sort of job is $100. Anyone quoting a single national average for a Wyndham backyard is guessing.

Read the last two rows together. One puts a fortnightly visit on a 600 square metre block at $50 to $75, another puts a smaller 400 square metre property at $80 to $100. The bigger lawn comes out cheaper because the two are not pricing the same thing: one is a regular on a planned round, the other is a visit booked on its own.
Per visit or per hour
Hourly quoting is common. One 2026 estimate puts Victorian mowing operators at an average of about $45 an hour, with $55 to $75 an hour commonly quoted around Melbourne and ride-on work up to $120. For a standard suburban lawn, per visit pricing is the safer of the two for the customer.
The difference is who carries the risk when a job runs long. On an hourly rate, a wet lawn or a gate that will not take the mower is your problem, because the clock keeps running. On an agreed price it is the gardener’s.
What actually drives the price
Lawn area matters less than people expect. On a suburban block the mowing itself is a predictable twenty minutes or so. What moves the price is everything around it: how long the grass is, how hard the lawn is to reach, whether the edges get done, and whether anything leaves on a trailer.
- Grass length. Long grass is two or three passes, and several times the clippings.
- Access. A side gate too narrow for a mower means everything goes through on foot.
- Edges. A price that looks low against another sometimes has no edging in it.
- Frequency. A fortnightly lawn is never long. A lawn cut twice a year is a clean-up wearing the word mow.
- Where the clippings end up. In Wyndham this carries a specific local cost, covered below.
Block size in Melbourne’s west, in real numbers
Newer estate blocks in Tarneit, Truganina and Manor Lakes commonly sit around 350 to 450 square metres. Established streets in Hoppers Crossing and Werribee mostly run 550 to 650. Anything over 700 square metres is a large block for pricing. If you do not know yours, your council rates notice lists it.
Estate blocks are small but rarely all lawn, and a 400 square metre block with a courtyard, garden beds and a nature strip can take longer than a plain 600 square metre rectangle in an older street. Corner blocks carry two nature strips, which the block size figure does not show.
Is green waste removal included, and why it matters here
Ask this before agreeing a price. A mowing quote can mean the clippings go in your green lid bin, or that they leave on a trailer. Those cost the gardener different amounts, and the gap explains much of the difference between a $50 quote and a $95 one.
Wyndham delivered a green lid Food Organics and Garden Organics bin to every household on a council waste service that did not already have one, during February and March 2026. It is collected fortnightly, on the opposite week to recycling, and takes grass clippings, leaves, prunings and branches.
For a fortnightly mow on an estate block the clippings usually fit. The trouble starts when they do not: a lawn left six weeks, a hedge trim, or a mow the week the bin is already full. Then somebody is making a tip run. Wyndham’s fee schedule dated 1 July 2023 listed a heaped single axle trailer of green waste at $100 at the Refuse Disposal Facility on Wests Road in Werribee. Check the council’s current fees before planning around that.
Why a cheap quote often is not
A $50 mow can be honest work at a fair price. It can also be a price that leaves out the edging, leaves the clippings in your bin, and comes with a second visit you did not plan for. The way to tell is not to haggle, it is to ask what the number covers.
Three things to check: whether the edges are done every visit, whether the clippings leave the property, and whether there is a minimum charge.
One thing that is not a warning sign is a price with no GST on it. A business only has to register for GST once turnover reaches $75,000, a threshold unchanged since GST started on 1 July 2000. A sole trader under it does not charge GST at all. That is a fact about the size of the business, not a discount.
